Job Description RCH Solutions is seeking a DevOps Engineer with strong backend development skills who will be instrumental in the continued investment in discovery research. We are currently seeking an outstanding engineer with proven experience building secure, well-governed services and the cloud infrastructure that runs them. Using a broad range of backend engineering, infrastructure-as-code, and cloud security methods, the successful individual will continue to evolve growing initiatives for data access, platform reliability, and secure delivery to enable the scientific community.
The successful candidate will own both sides of the platform: the TypeScript/Node.js services that expose governed access to scientific and analytical data, and the GCP infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, and security posture that support them. Expertise in access control design, relational data modeling, Terraform, and cloud observability is highly desired.
Role and Responsibilities
Backend
Design, build, and maintain backend services in TypeScript and Node.js
Design and implement role-based access control (RBAC) across applications and data layers
Model and evolve relational schemas using Prisma or a comparable ORM, including migrations
Implement and govern BigQuery access patterns at row, dataset, and table level
Build well-documented, typed APIs consumed by front-end and data science teams
Apply AI coding tools (GitHub Copilot, Claude, etc.) within established guardrails to accelerate delivery without compromising code quality
DevOps / Platform
Build and maintain GCP infrastructure: Cloud Run, Artifact Registry, Cloud SQL, IAM, and VPC Service Controls
Define and manage infrastructure as code using Terraform
Own CI/CD pipelines in GitHub Actions covering build, test, and deploy
Manage security posture: Dependabot triage, dependency and vulnerability remediation, and secrets management
Containerize services with Docker and maintain reproducible build and release processes
Implement observability, logging, and monitoring using Cloud Monitoring and related tooling
Participate in code review, architecture discussions, and incident response
Essential Requirements
Strong professional backend development experience in TypeScript and Node.js
Hands-on experience designing and implementing role-based access control (RBAC)
Relational schema design and migration experience with Prisma or a similar ORM
Practical BigQuery experience, including access patterns at row, dataset, or table level
Production experience with GCP infrastructure: Cloud Run, Artifact Registry, Cloud SQL, and IAM
Infrastructure as code with Terraform
CI/CD pipeline ownership in GitHub Actions (build, test, deploy)
Dependency and vulnerability remediation, including Dependabot triage and secrets management
Docker containerization in a production environment
Observability, logging, and monitoring practices using Cloud Monitoring or equivalent
Practical experience using AI coding tools (Copilot, Claude, etc.) in a professional setting
Ability to work independently in a distributed team on a UK or US East Coast schedule
Minimum Qualifications
BS in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or equivalent practical experience
2–7 years of professional software engineering or platform engineering experience
Strong JavaScript/TypeScript fundamentals, including asynchronous patterns and typed API contracts
SQL proficiency sufficient to design schemas and reason about query performance
Working knowledge of networking, identity, and cloud security fundamentals
Proficiency with Git and modern code review workflows
Collaborator across a diverse set of groups, including non-technical scientific stakeholders
Excellent communication skills
Multitasking: balancing a diverse set of projects and deadlines
Curiosity and excitement about technology
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with VPC Service Controls or comparable data exfiltration and perimeter controls
Experience implementing data governance or audit requirements in a regulated environment
Experience with BigQuery cost management and access-pattern optimization
Exposure to scientific data platforms (biological, chemical, clinical, or similar)
Experience defining SLOs, alerting strategy, or on-call practices
Track record of success contributing to and advancing discovery programs
Additional Information Great talent should benefit from a great work environment. If you join our team, you’ll have access to:
